The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) urged the government to prioritize building more classrooms to resolve the shortage in schools nationwide.
Compared to the allocated national budget for the Build Better More infrastructure program with P1.2 trillion, ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua highlighted the big difference for classroom construction with only a P15.6 billion budget.
“Why not ensure that P100 billion of the infrastructure budget be allocated to classroom building to resolve the classroom shortage decisively,” the chairperson said.
Quetua reiterated that there were over 165,000 classroom shortages which affect a massive 20% of learners in the country.
The government should address the nationwide shortage in classrooms instead of building more bridges and infrastructures that only benefit foreign and private companies, he added.
“Sayang ang pera sa mga mapagkunwaring magagarbong tulay na may magagarang ilaw habang ang mamamayan ay nagugutom at mangmang,” Quetua ended.
