Manila Electric Company (Meralco) consumers should brace themselves this May as electricity will be increased by P0.46 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

In an advisory on Tuesday, Meralco said it will increase rates by 46.21 centavos adjusting to P11.4139 kWh from P10.9518 per kWh in March.

In line with this, residential customers who are consuming 200 kWh will have to pay P92 in their total electricity monthly bill.

Meralco said the increase is attributed to higher generation charges, due to higher costs from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Power Supply Agreements (PSAs).

Meanwhile, transmission fees, taxes, and other charges went up by P0.0166 per kWh while Meralco’s distribution charge remains the same since the P0.0360 per kWh reduction was implemented in August 2022.

Meralco also reminded the public anew to steer clear of power lines when flying kites or picking fruits from trees to help avoid power interruptions and accidents such as electrocution.

“We are appealing to our customers to refrain from flying kites and picking fruits near power lines since these can cause power interruptions and accidents,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga.
