The Quezon City Regional Trial Court on Thursday postponed the scheduled arraignment of Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, the suspect in the fatal Ateneo de Manila University gun attack last month, in order to let him take an examination for mental health.
This comes after Yumol's lawyers claimed that the suspect showed tell-tale signs of mental disorders.
The arraignment was scheduled for September 16, according to Quirino Esguerra, a lawyer of the Furigay family.
"The arraignment was deferred to Sept. 16. The lawyer of the accused asked the court that he be checked by a medical expert for exhibiting symptoms of having an unsound mind," Esguerra said.
Three persons — former mayor of Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay, her assistant Victor Capistrano, and ADMU security guard Jeneven Bandiala died during the shooting rampage that transpired last July 24 at the Jesuit-run university’s Areté Building, where the College of Law School’s graduation was scheduled to take place.
Yumol is currently facing three counts of murder and one count of frustrated murder for the injuries sustained by Hannah Rose Marian Furigay, the late former mayor’s daughter.
According to Esguerra, the court will designate a doctor from the National Center for Mental Health to examine Yumol.
