One of the suspects in the ambush of Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal 'Bombit' Alonto-Adiong, Jr. was killed in a shootout with the police, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.
In a statement, Police Regional Office - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region chief Police Brigadier General John Guyguyon said that the suspect, identified only as “Otin,” was killed during pursuit operations conducted from February 17 to 19.
PNP said "Otin" is the son of one alias “Fighter,” one of the five suspects in the ambush who are still at large.
PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin, Jr. lauded the local police for the development.
"The successful pursuit operation shows that the PNP will not tolerate lawlessness and will do everything in our power to ensure the safety and security of our people," Azurin said.
On February 17, unidentified gunmen fired on Alonto-Adiong Jr.'s convoy in Maguing, Lanao del Sur.
The Lanao del Sur governor was wounded and rushed to a provincial hospital, while his three security personnel and driver were killed.
Alonto-Adiong Jr. is now "stable" after a successful surgery that took out the bullet on his upper right waist, his brother Zia Alonto Adiong confirmed in a press conference on Saturday.
