The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), in coordination with the Social Security System (SSS), is on the helm of a whole-of-government approach to improving Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) and their families’ accessibility to social security, as publicized in a press release on Wednesday, September 4.
This partnership aims to familiarize OFWs and their families who would otherwise remain oblivious of social securities which may prove beneficial come the OFW’s reintegration. On August 27, the DMW and SSS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), through which an immense campaign for the dissemination of information on social security programs and membership benefits will be conducted.
“Alam po natin na ang mga OFWs at ang kanilang pamilya ay uhaw sa impormasyon (We know that OFWs and their families crave information) on how to make wise decisions for enhanced social protection and financial freedom,” Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated.
“Through this partnership, OFWs and their families will have enhanced access to social safety nets for retirement, unemployment, and other contingencies,” he added.
Additionally, with the SSS and other stakeholders on board, the DMW will be able to modify savings and provident fund programs with OFWs in mind.
SSS President and CEO Rolando Macasaet assured that the institution is dedicated to assisting OFWs and welcomes the surge of OFW SSS members, which has shot up from 1 million to 4 to 5 million.
