House Speaker Martin G. Romualdez urged Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. on Thursday to reconsider his decision not to return, saying it "does not sit well" for a House member to flee the country rather than pursue all legal options.
Following a private meeting with Teves' legal counsel, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, who sought to personally relay "some concerns" of his client, the House leader issued the statement.
During the meeting, Romualdez stated that Teves should immediately return to the country and report for work.
According to the House Speaker, the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges has already acquired jurisdiction over Teves' case, which was decided at its meeting on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
Meanwhile, Teves has requested a two-month leave of absence extension from Romualdez via House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco.
The Negros Oriental lawmaker requested the extension in a letter dated March 9, the deadline date of his initial leave of absence, citing a "very grave threat to his life and family."
The House of Representatives has yet to act on the letter request.
In the meantime, Romualdez reiterated that he and the entire House leadership "will use all necessary means to pave the way for Cong. Arnie's safe return to his homeland."
