South Korea's opposition parties reported that they submitted an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol following his declaration of a short-lived martial law.
Representatives from six opposition parties, including the main Democratic Party, stated that they have submitted an urgent impeachment motion and will soon discuss when to put it to a vote, with a possible vote as early as Friday.
Furthermore, the Democratic Party argued that President Yoon's declaration of martial law was a clear violation of the constitution, asserting that it did not meet the legal requirements for such a declaration.
"His martial law declaration was originally invalid and a grave violation of the constitution. It was a grave act of rebellion and provides perfect grounds for his impeachment," the party stated.
On Tuesday, Yoon shocked the nation and the world by declaring martial law in a surprise late-night TV address, stating that the measure was necessary to protect the country from communist forces and eliminate anti-state elements.
However, less than two hours after his declaration, opposition parties voted to block his decision. The President then quickly reversed his martial law declaration after the assembly vote.
