A soldier perished during an encounter between the military and the New People's Army on Sunday, October 8, in Laur, Nueva Ecija.
The 7th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army identified the casualty as Private First Class Sher Nelson Casayuran.
Reports state that Casayuran suffered a gunshot wound, and was declared dead on arrival at the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.
"The Kaugnay Troopers mourn for the loss of PFC Casayuran," said Major General Andrew Costelo, Commander of the 7th Infantry (Kaugnay) Division, in a statement.
"His bravery, dedication, and heroism will not be forgotten as he offered his ultimate sacrifice just to protect the people of Laur," Costelo added.
The armed encounter happened after the 84th Infantry Batallion received a tip-off from the residents of Brgy. San Fernando that more or less 10 suspected members of the communist terrorist have been circling the area and harassing the people.
Reports state that the alleged communist rebels have been brandishing their guns and terrorizing the residents.
“We immediately ensure the security of the community that is why we sent our troops there to verify the information. These CTG members were armed and has been terrorizing the community," Costelo said.
"Pinipilit nilang sumuporta ang mga tao sa kanila kasi hindi na nga sila makagalaw dahil wala na silang suporta ng masa. Kaya panay ang pananakot nila sa mga tao," he added.
