Security measures at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, will be examined while more campus police will be assigned to "areas with a history of being dangerous" after a student was attacked and sexually raped on campus by an outsider on July 1.

Chancellor Edgardo Vistan II, in a statement, said that they were reassessing blind spots and erecting more security outposts, particularly on long sections of road within the campus.

On Monday, the administration issued a statement confirming the attack.

"The UPD administration has been working with police authorities for the immediate apprehension of the suspect and closely coordinating with the survivor to provide all necessary assistance," it read.

A knife-wielding man sexually assaulted a student on Ylanan Street at approximately 11 p.m. This Saturday. Vistan stated that she was being treated in a hospital and that she had access to counselors.

The Commission on Higher Education stated in a separate statement that it was offering help to the student and her family, as its chair, Prospero de Vera III, termed the assault a "wake-up call" for UP to reconsider its security laws.

"This despicable criminal act is a wake-up call for [UP] to review and rationalize its security and safety policies, including its operational engagement with the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies, in order to make the UP Community safe and secure," said De Vera, who is also a member of the UP Board of Regents.

Meanwhile, the university has also advised the general public to be cautious and to report "anything suspicious" to UP police.

According to Vistan, UP administrators are also "conscious" of the sections on campus that still lack streetlights or that require maintenance.
