Senate tightens security following social media bomb threat
by Jim Fernandez18 December 2024

The Philippine Senate has put preemptive, additional safety measures in place, after receiving a bomb threat.

The bomb threat, posted as a comment on the Senate’s Facebook page on Tuesday morning, was “most likely by a prankster,” said Senate Secretary Atty. Renato Bantug, as the comment was supposedly spread everywhere by the same user.

“While it was not considered as a credible and serious threat, the OSAA (Office of the Sergeant-At-Arms) is nevertheless taking the necessary precautions," Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said.

Of the same mind, Senate Spokesperson Arnel Jose Bañas said the safety of the senators, employees, and visitors are of utmost importance, and that the Senate premises have been carefully inspected by its security, as well as police officers.

“We have instructed our Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms to work closely with concerned agencies regarding the matter,” Bañas stated.
