After the untimely passing of award-winning actress Jaclyn Jose on Sunday, the Senate has filed a resolution to express sympathy and sincere condolences to the veteran actress.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who also started his career as an actor before entering the Senate, filed Senate Resolution No. 942, calling Jose’s unexpected death a “tragic loss to the entertainment industry.”
In a statement, Estrada commended the actress’ exceptional skills and talents for bringing pride and honor to the history of Philippine cinema and the awards she received throughout her career.
The senator said that Jose’s Cannes award became the reason for filing Senate Bill No. 1032, or the proposed World-Class Filmmakers’ Incentives Act, which pushes for the promotion of the production of world-class Filipino films by granting tax perks.
While still alive, Jose has proven her unmatched acting skills as she has gathered several awards, both local and international, being recognized at the Cannes Film Festival, the Gawad Urian, the Luna Awards, the Filipino Academy of Move Arts and Sciences Awards, and the Metro Manila Film Festival.
On the other hand, Senator Robin Padilla, also an actor, called on his fellow lawmakers to extend their deep condolences to Jose’s bereaved family.
He then described the late actress as a mentor, professor, and inspiration to young artists.
Mary Jane Guck, her real name, brought honor to the Philippines for being the only Filipino and Southeast Asian to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016.
She passed away at the age of 60 due to a heart attack.
