Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros revealed that illegal drugs such as cannabidiol (CBD) oil, magic mushrooms, and LSD are being sold on e-commerce platforms like Lazada, disguised as chocolate bars or trading cards.

During the Senate Committee on Health and Demography hearing on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Hontiveros said her staff discovered the illicit products being marketed online, raising serious concerns over public safety, especially for parents and young consumers.

Hontiveros urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and online platforms to act swiftly by enforcing clear and strict take-down policies against dangerous and illegal products.

The senator also defended her proposed Counterfeit Pharmaceutical Products Prevention Act, saying the measure aims to protect Filipinos who increasingly purchase medicines and health products through online platforms.

She warned that consumers are often exposed to counterfeit products falsely marketed as legitimate medicines but containing incorrect dosages, ineffective ingredients, or substances with no therapeutic value. She further raised alarm over unregulated products that lack FDA evaluation, scientific proof, and proper clinical testing.

Hontiveros noted that online sellers can easily evade accountability by switching accounts or business models, leaving consumers vulnerable. She cited reports from dialysis centers showing younger patients developing kidney problems, with some cases linked to supplements or medicines bought online without clear origins or regulatory approval.

She called for stronger accountability among regulatory agencies and e-commerce platforms, warning that weak regulation could undermine the country’s Universal Health Care program and endanger public health.
