Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa remains inside the Senate complex, his lawyer said on Thursday, disputing claims that the lawmaker used a reported shooting incident as a diversion to leave the premises.

Attorney Israelito Torreon shared photos on social media showing himself with Dela Rosa inside the Senate building. He said the images were meant to counter speculation that gunfire reported Wednesday night was staged to facilitate the senator’s escape.

“May mga nagaasabi na diversion tactic lang daw yung putukan para makaalis sa Senado si Senator Dela Rosa, eh ipost nga natin ito para matigil na yang mga kwento na yan,” Torreon said in his post.

Torreon added that he and others with the senator were unharmed following the incident, expressing gratitude that Dela Rosa, his staff, fellow lawyers, and other senators and personnel in the building were safe.

The statement came after tensions escalated Wednesday evening, May 13, when gunshots were reportedly heard on the second floor of the Senate building. The incident occurred amid heightened security concerns surrounding Dela Rosa and reports of a possible arrest tied to an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Authorities have yet to release full details about the reported gunfire, including its source and whether any injuries or arrests were recorded.

Dela Rosa has been under increased scrutiny following developments related to the ICC probe into alleged crimes against humanity linked to the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.

Earlier this week, the International Criminal Court confirmed it had issued and unsealed an arrest warrant for Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, adding him to its list of wanted persons over alleged crimes against humanity.

The Senate has not issued a comprehensive statement on the incident as of writing.
