Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday confirmed she will no longer run for the presidency in the upcoming polls after her father President Rodrigo Duterte accepted his party's nomination for vice president.
“I am not running for a national position as we both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” the presidential daughter said in a text message sent to reporters.
Duterte-Carpio also thanked her supporters saying, "I am happy we are united in our desire to see a better Philippines in the future. I will be eternally thankful for your trust and confidence."
She also added that her regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), will not "share light this time" with PDP-Laban in the 2022 national elections.
Duterte-Carpio also maintained her relationship with her father is fine.
"The same as it was before. Our politics do not interfere with our familial relationship. Iba ang trabaho, iba ang pamilya. Walang personalan," she said.
On Wednesday, Duterte formally accepted the nomination by the PDP-Laban faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
“Thank you for the nomination, I am hopeful that this will allow me to continue serving the Filipino people and help lead the entire nation towards greater progress,” Duterte said in his speech.
According to Duterte, he had never been engaged in any corruption in his four decades in the government.
"Alam mo kung bakit ako tatakbong vice president? Is it ambition? Maybe. But is it really a sense of love of country? Yes. Because I want to see the continuity of my efforts even though I may not be the one giving the direction. Baka makatulong lang ako," the President stated.
