Vice President Sara Duterte has resigned as a member of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), which is recognized as the dominant political party in the House of Representatives.
Assuming the position of chairperson within the party, Duterte has declared that her resignation will take effect from Friday onwards.
Although she did not explicitly state the reason for her decision to withdraw from the party, Duterte alluded to the presence of "power struggles" as the underlying cause.
"I stand before you today because of the unwavering trust of the Filipino people...This trust must not be tainted by political toxicity or eroded by reprehensible power struggles," Duterte remarked.
In February of this year, Duterte and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who is also the first cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., resumed their respective positions as chairperson and president of the Lakas-CMB.
"I am here today because of the trust of the Filipino people in me to lead and serve them and the country, and this cannot be poisoned by political toxicity or undermined by execrable political powerplay," she expressed.
Furthermore, Duterte emphasized that her unwavering dedication to serving the Filipino people remains steadfast and unchanging.
"Nothing is more important to me than being able to meaningfully serve our fellow Filipinos and the Philippines — with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr leading the way. Trust that my word, my commitment will be immutable," her statement read.
