Former Presidential Spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque was not granted asylum in the Netherlands, according to Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.
In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, Remulla said that, to his knowledge, Roque's asylum request was rejected, which is why he is now in Germany.
"Ang alam ko, hindi siya nabigyan ng asylum ng Netherlands, kaya nasa Germany na—na siyang magbibigay nito," said Remulla.
Remulla noted that an extradition request may soon be filed but added that it may no longer be necessary if Roque's passport is canceled.
"'Pag naging undocumented alien 'yan, puwede nang kunin ng Interpol," he said.
On June 14, Roque denied reports about the asylum denial, stressing that only he and the Dutch government have access to the proceedings.
"Asylum proceedings have not yet concluded, and no one has access to the proceedings except me and the Dutch government, as the matter is treated with confidentiality," Roque said in a Facebook post.
Roque is currently facing human trafficking charges in connection with Lucky South 99, a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) based in Porac, Pampanga.
Lucky South 99 has been under investigation for alleged illegal activities.
A warrant of arrest was issued by Branch 118 of the Regional Trial Court in Angeles City, Pampanga.
An expert said that an arrest warrant can still be enforced even if Roque is currently abroad.
Meanwhile, Roque denied the allegations against him and said that he is a victim of the government's “political persecution”.
