In recent weeks, social media has been abuzz with a controversial trend involving visits to the grave of 90s heartthrob Rico Yan.

Photos and videos of Filipino netizens at Yan's tomb have gone viral, sparking a heated debate: are these visits genuine expressions of respect, or are they crossing the line into disrespect?

Many fans visit Yan's grave to honor the late actor, known for his roles in beloved shows and films such as "Got 2 Believe," "Gimik," "Mula sa Puso," "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay," and "Flames: The Movie."

Yan tragically passed away in 2002 at the age of 27 due to cardiac arrest caused by acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. His death left a significant impact on his fans and the entertainment industry.

However, the behavior of some visitors has raised eyebrows.

Instead of quietly paying their respects, some have turned Yan’s resting place into a ‘tourist spot’.

One particular incident involved a now-deleted TikTok video showing a user walking around the grave, touching the nameplate, and even leaning on the tomb.

Another Facebook post compiled photos of netizens taking selfies and group photos at the site.

The trend’s origin is unclear, but some speculate it started with clips from Yan's old movies circulating on platforms like Twitter and TikTok.

While many find the trend amusing and a way to remember their idol, others have criticized the questionable behavior of some visitors.

Critics argue that this “obsession” with Rico Yan should be reconsidered.

One commenter suggested that while there is nothing wrong with being a fan, using Yan’s grave as a backdrop for social media clout is inappropriate. They urged netizens to stop if their visits are merely to follow a trend.

Some defenders of the trend see no harm in it, claiming it’s a way for fans to connect with their idol.

However, another commenter reminded visitors to respect the peace of the deceased actor, warning that Yan’s family might tighten security around the grave if such behavior continues.
