Former senator and prominent human rights lawyer Rene Saguisag passed away, his family announced on Wednesday. He was 84.
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Papa and Lolo," his son, Atty. Rebo Saguisag wrote in a Facebook post.
"As we mourn his loss, we take solace in the enduring impact of his legacy," he added.
From 1972 to 1986, Saguisag was a human rights lawyer before becoming the spokesman for then-President Corazon Aquino.
Saguisag ran for senator in 1987 and served until 1992 under the banner of the Liberal Party.
As a senator, Saguisag served as Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges. He also served on the "ad hoc" committee on the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.
In 2007, he was injured in a car accident in Makati City that killed his wife, Dulce.
Saguisag taught Constitutional Law and Human Rights Law at San Beda University, where he graduated cum laude.
The former senator eventually entered Harvard and obtained his Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1968.
He was also a columnist at The Manila Times, with his last column published on November 26, 2021.
The former senator had left five children: Rene Andrei Jr., Rebo, Nonoy, Lara, Laurence, and Kaissa.
