Basketball player John Amores could lose his license as a professional athlete due to a shooting incident last September in Lumban, Laguna.

Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairperson Francisco Rivera said that the regulatory agency already reached out to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), and waits for the league to finish investigating the incident.

"We maintain the procedure that it would be the Philippine Basketball Association which would first investigate this matter," Rivera said on Monday, October 7, during the hearing of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on the proposed Php 157.869 million budget of the agency for 2025.

"The investigation could potentially involve his expulsion from the league. Once that is done, the Games and Amusement Board could, as a result, cancels his registration with us," Rivera added.

Amores, a player of the PBA team Northport BatangPier, faces charges for attempted homicide after he fired a gun at a person who he had an altercation during a basketball game.

Authorities released Amores and his brother after they posted bail.

Sen. Christopher 'Bong' Go, who presided over the hearing, mentioned that Amores, prior to joining the PBA, also got involved in an in-game physical altercation, which led to his indefinite suspension in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Rivera said that Amores received a professional license on the basis that he would 'behave well', and undergo therapy for anger management.

However, Rivera cannot confirm whether Amores completed the therapy.

"The Games and Amusement Board was on the view the we have to give him the opportunity to rehabilitate himself," the GAB chairperson explained.

"On the basis of his past conduct, it appeared to the Games and Amusement Board that (his anger issues) was still manageable," he stressed.

Following the shooting incident, Rivera said that the same argument can no longer work for Amores.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said that the league already heard the side of Amores and will decide on his fate in the upcoming weeks.
