Over 100 million mobile phone users have completed the registration process for their Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards ahead of the extended deadline, according to recent data from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
As of June 21, 2023, a total of 100,156,879 SIM cards were successfully registered, constituting approximately 59.61% of the overall subscriber base, which stands at 168,016,400.
In late April, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved a 90-day extension for SIM card registration, extending the deadline from April 26 to July 25.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) aims to register 70% of the total subscriber base in order to validate the legitimacy of SIM card users.
As the additional registration period progresses, the DICT plans to gradually disable certain SIM services, including access to social media accounts and outgoing calls, for individuals who fail to register.
Among the registered SIM cards, 47.320 million belong to Smart subscribers, representing 71.37% of the company's total subscriber base of 66.304 million.
Globe, on the other hand, recorded 45.914 million registered SIM cards, accounting for 52.93% of its 86.746 million subscribers.
DITO Telecommunity reached 6.922 million registered subscribers, equivalent to 46.26% of its total customer base of 14.964 million.
