Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo recently spoke about her mental health journey in a heartfelt social media post aimed at raising awareness.
On January 16, the beauty queen took to her personal Facebook account to share her experience with mental health challenges. Along with her message, she posted her medical certificate and official diagnosis to shed light on the reality of her condition.
In her caption, she revealed, “2025, I was diagnosed with depression and anxious distress. I had my several rounds of medication. I left the country for 3 months so I won’t get triggered by people who have no idea what I’ve been going through.”
Rabiya further opened up about the emotional toll of her struggle, adding, “Everyday was a struggle to survive. I almost deactivated everything and disappear to have a quiet and peaceful life. I fought hard and still fighting up until now.”
She also shared that the recent passing of Emmanuel Atienza, the daughter of television personality Kuya Kim Atienza, deeply affected her. Rabiya said the incident resonated with her and the family’s grief, prompting her to make a personal vow to keep going, as she feared her own mother could experience the same pain if she gave up.
She concluded her post with a powerful reminder, “You don’t know how little kindness mean to a depressed person like me and how your words can push me to do something else.”
Following her post, Rabiya received an outpouring of love and encouragement from fans, fellow beauty queens, and supporters who praised her bravery and honesty.
