The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo Church was declared a “national shrine” on Monday, January 29.
The Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila announced in a Facebook post.
“Malugod na bumabati ang Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila sa mga Deboto ni Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno de Quiapo ngayong ganap nang isang Pambansang Dambana o National Shrine ang simbahan ng Quiapo,” the agency said.
Quiapo Church’s Facebook post last year showed Msgr. Bernardo Patin, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) secretary general, entrusted to Fr. Jun Sescon, parish priest, the decree on the Quiapo Church’s status as a national shrine.
The Quiapo Church is known for the Traslacion of the Black Nazarene which serves as an annual religious tradition that commemorates the venerated image’s transfer from Intramuros to Quiapo Church in 1787.
