The House Bill 9349, or “Absolute Divorce Act," was brought back to plenary session on Tuesday, headed by Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas and Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, who both pushed for the divorce law in the Philippines and sponsored the said bill.
According to the report of RH 12 Milky Rigonan, Brosas claimed that since the 13th Congress, Gabriela Partylist have already been seeking to legalize the divorce law in the country.
She added that the enactment of the proposed bill is timely to give married couples, particularly the abused wives, an option to leave and have the liberty of a horrible marriage.
Lagman, who is the main author of the Absolute Divorce Bill, explained its importance for a marriage that has already collapsed and has no chance to be fixed.
According to the data shown by Lagman, the majority of the victims are women who have suffered abuse, cruelty, and infidelity from their significant other.
Lagman added that the divorce bill will serve women’s way of showing self-love and love towards their children and be free from an abusive marriage.
He appealed to his fellow legislators to approve the proposed bill and thanked House Speaker Martin Romualdez and House Majority Leader Manuel Dalipe for giving the divorce bill a chance in the House plenary session.
Meanwhile, it can be expected that the divorce bill will be a hot topic in Congress once the interpellation is started.
