The Syrian government has tapped the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) for additional assistance and donations following the massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rattled Syria and Turkiye earlier this month.

In a statement, the Syrian Consulate General said donations could be coursed through PRC which will serve as the collection site. They also called on local charitable foundations, non-government organizations, companies, and organizations for medicines, winter blankets, winter clothing, and tents.

Donations can be forwarded to the Mandaluyong headquarters of the PRC.

PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon said the Red Cross is ready to receive donations for Syria.

"PRC is in communication with the Honorable Consulate General of the Syrian Arab Republic and we will be opening our doors to be collection sites for donations to help our Syrian brothers and sisters who are in dire need of help," Gordon said.

The death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that struck on Feb. 6 surpassed 50,000 on Friday after Turkey declared more than 44,000 people died.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the death toll in Turkey due to earthquakes rose to 44,218 on Friday night.

With Syria's latest announced a death toll of 5,914, the combined death toll in the two countries rose to above 50,000.
