President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. on Tuesday said he is eyeing to put the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) under the Office of the President (OP).

In an interview with reporters on the sidelines of the 9th-year commemoration of super typhoon Yolanda, Marcos said there had been a suggestion to put the national disaster response team under the OP for many years.

"I think that we are headed in that direction because of the weather that we are suffering now from the effects of climate change," he said.

"I think it would be equally, if not, a more robust system if we put it [NDRRMC] under the Office of the President," Marcos said.

With this repositioning, he said it would help the NDRRMC to be responsive in terms of bringing assistance, putting the infrastructure together, and ensuring communication among the local government units during calamities.

The President also said that placing the agency under his office would “refine” the processes and procedures to do "even better" in disaster response efforts.

Marcos bared that the repositioning would happen in the “near future.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Martin Romualdez expressed his support for the chief executive’s plan.

“It simplifies the flow of responsibility and directives to the more than 30 departments, agencies, and organizations sitting in the council,” Romualdez said.

He underscored the need to “streamline” disaster response and management of risks, noting that the country is in a peculiar situation due to the reported average of 20 tropical storms that could visit the Philippines every year.

In 2010, Congress created the NDRRMC under Republic Act No. 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act.
