Prez Duterte on running for VP: 'If there's a space for me, then maybe'

''It’s not at all a bad idea, and if there is space for me there."

This was the statement of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday, June 29 as he, once again, floated the idea of running for vice president in the 2022 national elections.

"Pero kung wala akong space and everybody is crowding up wanting to be one, vice president, sila na lang muna kasi tapos na ako," Duterte said during his regular address to the nation.

The President also added that it would be a "good idea' as he still had to take care of some unfinished business. However, he did not further specify what are those.

Duterte, who assumed the presidency in 2016, had been vocal about his intention of curbing crime and removing the country’s long-standing problem with drugs.

Previously, the Chief Executive said he is resisting calls for him to run for vice president in the 2022 national elections because he is ready for retirement.

“Mahirap ‘yan pastor kasi mag-retire na ko tapos this time ako ang mamili ng president, tapos ‘pag manalo sabihin nila, ano lang yan, perpetuate yourself in power. So nagreresist ako,” Duterte said in an interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy in Davao City.

Duterte also mentioned that he will not contend against House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez if ever the latter decides to run for the vice presidency as he had promised him his support.

“The problem was there was a serious contender also for the speakership, si Congressman Romualdez. Kaya ang deal ko sa kaniya ganito — huwag ka na lang maghabol diyan and next election, which is just around the corner, if you run for vice president, I will support you,” Duterte said.

He was referring to the House leadership struggle between Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano last year.

“I will hold on [to] that commitment.‘Pag tumakbo si Romualdez, wala ako,” Duterte continued.
