President Rodrigo Duterte is claiming that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has found developments in Boracay Island that belong to the family of former Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio.
In his second taped address aired on Thursday night, Duterte said he ordered the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to include the property for land reform.
“The island of Boracay is a forestal land. ‘Yung forestal land, dapat walang bahay but may mga nakuha sila na mga lupa doon and one of them is the family of Justice Carpio,” Duterte said.
“So noong nalaman ko na marami nang subdivision sa likod, sa beach, I called [Agrarian Reform Secretary John] Castriciones: ‘Pumunta ka doon sa likod at tingnan mo. Tapos sabi ko sa DAR (Department of Agriculture), mag-apply ka, ipa-declare natin ‘yan as agricultural kaya ni-land reform ko,” he continued.
Carpio, known to be one of Duterte's staunchest critics, previously called his administration "incompetent" and vowed to offer a “better alternative."
He was also among those government officials who have been vocal about the current issues in the country like the COVID-19 pandemic, the West Philippine Sea, among others.
