The issue of delayed garbage collection in Manila is being looked into to assess whether it may be an intentional act of sabotage.
For several days now, Manila residents have been complaining about the piles of garbage on the streets. According to some residents, the garbage has not been collected since January 1.
As a result, the amount of garbage being collected in Manila is now four times higher than on regular days.
According to Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna, reports showed that some areas were not covered by garbage collection from December 30 to 31.
She further explained that the contract with the local government's service provider, Leonel Waste Management, is valid until the end of 2024, leaving her uncertain as to why some areas were missed as early as December 30.
Moreover, the service provider opted not to renew the contract, citing personal reasons.
“Medyo personal po kasi ‘yung kanilang dahilan. Malapit po sila [sa] dati pong nakaupong punong lungsod,” said Lacuna.
“Alam naman po ‘yon ng lahat na malapit po ang ating dating service provider sa dati pong alkalde,” she added.
Additionally, the failure to collect garbage may also have elements of sabotage, which is currently under investigation by the local government.
At present, the LGU has enlisted MetroWaste Solid Waste Management Corporation and Phil Ecology Systems Corp. as contractors for waste collection.
The waste management teams are now working round the clock, 24/7, to remove the remaining trash scattered across various areas of Manila.
