The Philippine National Police reported on Thursday that around 131 police officers were terminated from service from January 1 to February 14 this year.
In a press briefing, PNP spokesperson Colonel Jean Fajardo mentioned that the reason for dismissing these cops was their absence without leave (AWOL), while the others were involved in committing grave offenses.
She elaborated that 62 cases of police officers went AWOL while the remaining numbers were found guilty of grave offenses such as robbery, illegal drugs, obstruction of justice, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.
In 2023, the PNP logged more than 3,900 cops who have been meted with administrative penalties that started from July 1, 2022, to January 3, 2024, comprising 1.7% of the 232,000-strong police organization in the present.
Within that period, 985 police officers were terminated, 230 of them were demoted, and a total of 1,701 were subjected to suspension.
Also, a total of 694 law enforcers were reprimanded, of whom 109 had their privileges withheld, 134 experienced forfeited salaries, and 79 were prohibited from leaving their camps.
