The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured that it would respect the beliefs and devotion of Filipinos who will take part in the Traslacion on Friday, January 9, vowing to practice maximum tolerance and professionalism during the religious event.
In a report by RH 52 Edniel Parrosa on Thursday, Acting PNP Chief PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police to remain professional during the activity.
At the same time, authorities also issued strict reminders for devotees to observe throughout the procession.
In a press conference at Camp Crame, Manila Police Spokesperson PMaj. Philip Ines called on believers to show their devotion while refraining from disruptive acts such as jumping onto the “andas” or carriage.
“Patuloy po tayo nakikiusap sa kanila na ito po’y panahon ng pagninilay-nilay, ito po’y panahon na sabi nga titingnan po natin ‘yung ating pagkilala po sa ating lumikha. Ipakita po natin na tayo po talaga’y deboto at hindi po tayo panatiko,” he said.
In a separate statement, PNP Public Safety Division Chief PCol. Julius Domingo said that police are ready to arrest participants who violate local ordinances such as the liquor, gun, and firecracker bans.
“Involved din po ‘yan, not only doon sa firearms, of course, kung anong violation, we also included ‘yung sa operation against illegal drugs,” he said.
Last year, devotees swarmed the image of Jesus Nazarene at Ayala Bridge, leading to some tension and the arrest of some individuals. This year, no fewer than 20,000 PNP and security forces personnel have been stationed around Manila, whilst “full-alert” status is raised for the area.
