The Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating the reported disappearance of a Chinese national who was last seen in Taguig City on February 20.
PCOL Randulf Tuaño, chief of the PNP Public Information Office, stated that authorities have already obtained leads in connection with the case.
Moreover, the PNP is examining every possible angle to uncover the truth, given the widespread misinformation and fake news circulating on social media.
In a separate statement, PNP Chief PGen Rommel Francisco Marbil urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information to avoid causing unnecessary alarm.
Tuaño earlier dismissed as fake news a report alleging that a student was kidnapped and had a finger cut off due to a ransom dispute.
Marbil revealed that recent investigations indicate some criminal incidents, including kidnappings, are linked to the ongoing crackdown on illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).
From January 2024 to February this year, the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) recorded 40 kidnapping incidents, 10 of which involved Chinese victims abducted by fellow Chinese nationals.
However, the PNP did not confirm whether this is one of the angles being considered in the ongoing investigation.
