The Philippine National Police (PNP) called on the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to investigate recent statements made by Vice President Sara Duterte about an alleged threat to the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In an earlier press briefing, Duterte alleged that she had arranged for someone to assassinate President Marcos Jr., House Speaker Romualdez, and First Lady Liza Marcos in the event of her own assassination.
According to the PNP, all threats to the security of the President and public officials are handled with the highest degree of seriousness.
"In light of Vice President Sara Duterte's recent statement, which directly referenced an assassin contracted to target the President, the PNP recognizes the grave nature of this matter," the PNP-PIO said in a statement on November 23.
"The PNP Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, has directed the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to conduct a thorough and immediate investigation into this issue," it further stated.
The PNP further emphasized that the President's safety is a matter of national importance, stressing that any direct or indirect threats to his life must be addressed with the utmost urgency.
Furthermore, they assured the public that the PNP is committed to safeguarding all concerned individuals and will take appropriate legal actions in strict adherence to the law.
"The PNP remains committed to upholding public safety and maintaining peace across the nation," the PNP stated.
Previously, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin referred the reported threat to the Presidential Security Command (PSC) for immediate and appropriate action.
