The Philippine government is taking steps to evacuate its citizens from Sudan as the country experiences a deadly power struggle between the army and paramilitary forces.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that they are waiting for more information on the safety of bringing the evacuees out of Khartoum, Sudan, and possibly into Cairo, Egypt, where the Philippine Embassy has jurisdiction over the North African country.
"We are just waiting to get better information as to whether or not it will be safe to bring our evacuees out of Khartoum perhaps into Cairo," the president said on Saturday.
However, due to the ongoing conflict, airports are not functioning, and securing a safe land route is challenging.
The government is preparing the necessary assets for the evacuation, while the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised Filipinos in Sudan to stay indoors and seek repatriation if possible.
Approximately 400 Filipinos are estimated to be in Sudan, with at least 86 already seeking repatriation according to the latest data from the embassy in Cairo.
