Senate Minority Leader Aquilino 'Koko' Pimentel has showed determination to inspect any changes made in the provisions of the "tampered" Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) bill, claiming that any such adjustments merit legal action.
In an interview during DZRH’s Balansyado, Pimentel stated that if Marcos signs the legislation into law, he is ready to help groups that will question the MIF law on the final battleground, the Supreme Court (SC).
“Handa kami sa Minority na tumulong magbigay ng advice or factual input kung sino man ang mag-question sa Supreme Court ng Maharlika Investment Fund law. Sigurado naman ako na meron mag-question diyan,” he said.
Pimentel added that Senate majority bloc's recent move fueled speculations that MIF bill into law did not follow the constitutional process.
"Binigyan nila ng ammunition ang mga magtatanong nito... Sigurado ako meron akong grupo ng kukwestiyon nito at tutulong natin sila sa argumento,” the Senator said.
According to reports, long after the Senate bill was approved on third and final reading and adopted by the House of Representatives, members of the Senate majority bloc agreed to merge Sections 50 and 51—which included two periods of prescription for crimes and offenses—and keep the 10-year period instead of the 20-year period.
Pimentel stated that the Senate leadership would be unreasonable if certain MIF clauses were modified for the sake of "economy of words."
He explained that if the Senate plenary has only 24 members, the Senate's official action must be passed in plenary.
The Senator reminded us that no matter how many Senators agreed to the revisions, they did not pass the plenary session and could not be implemented.
Pimentel had previously stated that Marcos should veto the MIF bill and allow Congress to make any required modifications to sections that were not clearly explained as a result of the measure's hasty adoption.
He said that it would be a more patriotic act for Marcos if he vetoed the MIF and that the President’s political capital would improve through showing objective decisions.
