PHIVOLCS warns 'explosive eruption' of Mayon Volcano still possible
by Kristan Carag20 June 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned the public on Monday, June 19, that an explosive eruption of Mayon Volcano might still occur.

PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Teresito Bacolcol reiterated the warning as the agency records less volcanic activity.

"Yung condition ng bulkan anytime may change and progress into an explosive eruption," Bacolcol said during DZRH's Damdaming Bayan.

From 5:00 AM on Sunday, June 18, to 5:00 AM on Monday, PHIVOLCS recorded no volcanic earthquakes, 265 rockfall events, and five pyroclastic density current events.

"It is lower than the 11 pyroclastic density current events that we recorded on the same time frame between June 17 and June 18," Bacolcol stressed.

"Yung rockfalls natin ay medyo bumaba ng bahagya. Naging 265 na lang from 274 rockfall events," he added.

The increased unrest of Mayon Volcano prompted PHIVOLCS to raise Alert Level 3, which meant that the agency expects that a hazardous eruption could occur within weeks.

As of Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that the activity in Mayon Volcano displaced 5,466 families or 18,892 individuals in Albay.
