PHIVOLCS observes increased rockfall in Mayon Volcano
by Kristan Carag06 June 2023

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded 49 rockfall events in Mayon Volcano from Sunday, June 4, to Monday, June 5.

Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, director pf PHIVOLCS, said on Tuesday, June 6, that the increased rockfall signifies a 'seismic growth of the lava dome'.

The PHIVOLCS chief said that these developments prompted the agency to raise the alert level of Mayon Volcano from Level 1 to Level 2.

"Yung lava dome ay lumalaki," Bacolcol said during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.

Bacolcol said that PHIVOLCS normally records an average of five rockfalls per day in the volcano in Albay.
