The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday, July 21 warned that heavy rains induced by Tropical Depression Egay might possibly trigger lahar flow in several areas in Albay province.
In an advisory issued at 10 AM, Phivolcs said lahar could be generated in the areas of Mi-si, Binaan, Anoling, Quiarangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Naisis, Mabinit, Matan-ag, and Bassud channels.
“The incoming tropical depression is expected to bring about heavy and prolonged rainfall which may generate syn-eruption lahars along major channels draining the Mayon Volcano evidence by incorporating loose materials from thick pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits and ashfall from the ongoing 2023 eruption,” it explained.
According to Phivolcs, the lahars can threaten communities along the middle and lower slopes and downstream of channels with "inundation, burial, and wash away".
The state seismologist strongly urged Albayanos, especially those living in the aforementioned areas to be vigilant and practice necessary precautions.
Phivolcs also recommended communities and local government units (LGUs) beside the said possible lahar-affected areas to evacuate their residents to higher ground in case heavy rains occur.
