The state seismologist PHIVOLCS reported on Friday that it continues to observe rockfalls and longer lava flow effusion in Mayon Volcano in Albay province.

Based on its latest monitoring, the Mayon Volcano spewed 284 rockfalls and had 2 volcanic earthquakes from 5 AM on June 29 to 5 AM on June 30.

The very slow effusion of lava flow has extended its length from 2,100 kilometers recorded before to 2,230 kilometers along Mi-si Gully.

While the lava along Bonga Gully remains 1,300 kilometers from the Mayon Volcano’s summit crater.

No lava front pyroclastic density currents (PDC) were recorded but there were 7 dome-collapse PDCs with 2 to 3 minutes duration.

Phivolcs said the continuous voluminous degassing from the summit crater generated steam-laden plumes that reached 2,500 meters before drifting to the north and northeast direction.

The plumes recorded were higher as compared to the 1,000 meters logged on Thursday.

The Mayon volcano also emitted sulfur dioxide which averaged 595 tonnes per day.

“Alert Level 3 is maintained over Mayon Volcano, which means that it is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption within weeks or even days is possible,” Phivolcs said.

The latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of June 29 showed that over 40,000 residents in the 18 Municipalities of Albay province have been affected by the restiveness of the Mayon Volcano.

Of the number, 5,365 families, or 18,754 individuals were displaced in 28 evacuation centers in the province while 408 families, or 1,427 individuals were staying with friends and their family members outside the evacuation centers.
