The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) allayed concerns that the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on Thursday, June 15, will bring forth 'The Big One', a magnitude 7.2 or higher earthquake.
PHIVOLCS director and officer-in-charge Teresito Bacolcol explained that the Manila Trench generated the magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Calatagan, Batangas, while the agency expects that 'The Big One' will come from the West Valley Fault.
"Magkaiba sila. Hindi sila related. Yung paggalaw kahapon, hindi iyon makaka-trigger ng 'The Big One'," Bacolcol said on Friday, June 16, during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.
PHIVOLCS repeatedly warns that the West Valley moves around every 400 years, and the last recorded movement of the fault happened in 1658.
The agency stresses that the 'The Big One' could devastate Metro Manila and nearby regions.
