PHIVOLCS urges Filipinos: Take earthquake drills seriously after Japan's 7.6 magnitude quake
by Mary Antalan03 January 2024

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is urging the public to take the earthquake drills seriously.

The statement was made following the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, on the first day of 2024, which led to a total of 48 fatalities.

Interviewed in DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas, PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol stated that the nation's quarterly earthquake exercise organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) had to be taken seriously.

"Kailangan talagang seryosohin. Yung every quarter na ginagawa natin na pinamumunuan ng NDRRMC ay dapat talaga nating seryosohin," he said.

Bacolcol noted that it is also possible to have a strong earthquake in the country, similar to what happened in Japan.

He explained that there are also thrust faults in the Philippines that cause earthquakes.

"Sa atin dito meron din tayong mga thrust faults din katulad nung nangyare sa Bohol earthquake, October 2013 earthquake, so parang ganon yung yung mangyayare," he said.

Meanwhile, PHILVOCS also encourages the public to utilize the "How Safe is My House" mobile application to know and ensure that residences are earthquake-resilient.
