President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a meeting on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits and Related Summits in Laos on Tuesday, reaffirming commitment to enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries.
“We have made a good deal of progress since our very first discussion and some of the engagements between our two countries. And I am very happy that we will be able to pursue that,” Marcos said to the Vietnamese Prime Minister.
Marcos stated that the official engagements and discussions between the Philippines and Vietnam from two years ago are now yielding positive results.
“And it gives us also the opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation and of partnership. So, thank you,” Marcos added.
Marcos also conveyed his condolences for the fatalities caused by Typhoon Yagi's recent onslaught in Vietnam and for the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on July 19.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also reaffirmed Vietnam's dedication and commitment to strengthening ties with the Philippines.
“I want to reaffirm that we always support to the strategic partnership with the Philippines. I’m glad to note that the discussions that we began two years ago have been implemented effectively,” said the Prime Minister.
Notably, both countries signed several agreements, including those on rice trade cooperation, incident prevention in the South China Sea, and agricultural and cultural collaboration.
