The Philippines has experienced this year’s longest night caused by December Solstice — the moment the sun is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere — today, December 22, 2022.

The solstice happened at exactly 5:48 AM earlier.

"During the December Solstice, the northern hemisphere will experience the shortest day and longest night; this day also marks the first day of winter," the state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday.

With this, the southern hemisphere marked its first day of summer.
