The Philippines won its first-ever trophy for Pokémon Worlds!
As a first-timer in the global competition for the 2023 Pokemon Unite World Championship, Filipino team OMO Abyssinian finished in second place during the said competition held in Yokohama, Japan, on August 11 to 13.
Among the 28 teams, OMO Abyssinian made its way to the top and was hailed as the second-best team in the world after competing with Canadian esports group Luminosity Gaming for the final match.
Luminosity’s Sean Tucker acknowledged OMO Abyssianian’s skill, admittd that their team is already aware of the Pino team’s prowess and hoped for other teams to beat them out of the competition.
With their exceptional skills and teamwork towards the championship, OMO Abyssinian’s amazing players, Jose Miguel Liban, Luis John Felizarte, Michael Vaughn Ocio, Joshua De Leon, and Joe Daryl Maghanoy, made the Philippines proud.
The team’s achievement highlighted the growing prominence of Filipino esports on the global stage.
Moreover, OMO Abyssinian made a name for themselves with their remarkable performance in the World Championship Series and served as an inspiration and encouragement to the growth of the country when it comes to the esports industry.
Aside from securing the silver medal, OMO Abyssinian, owned by esports group Odd Man Out, also took home prize money of $75,000.
