In response to China’s accusations of the Philippines taking part in an arms race, the Department of National Defense (DND) insisted that it is instead merely enhancing its defense capabilities and China is employing “reverse psychology.”
“It seems to me that before other countries interfere (with) the creation of our credible defense posture, they should first stop their illegal activities, get out of the West Philippine Sea, take away their ballistic capabilities, destroy their nuclear arsenal, before they interfere with our creating a credible deterrent,” Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. told reporters at the Asian Defense and Security Exhibition (ADAS) 2024 at the World Trade Center.
He expressed determination in building a “credible deterrent posture.” He also said China should not worry about the Philippines’ defenses and withhold its criticisms.
“So, as I said, before they start talking, why don't they lead by example? Destroy their nuclear arsenal. Remove all their ballistic missile capabilities. Get out of the WPS and get out of Mischief Reef. I mean, don't throw stones when you live in a glass house and that goes for other countries also that are worried about our defensive capability enhancement. Don't throw stones if you live in glass houses,” he stated.
The country has set its sights on acquiring “big ticket items” compliant to the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC) like naval ships, platforms for maritime patrols, and multi-role fighters to enlarge the fleet of FA–50PH light combat aircraft, said Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.
He revealed an interest in purchasing the Mid-Range Capability (MRC) Typhon missile system but relented improvements in the Philippines’ defense capabilities would have to be accomplished so as to better support the advanced technology.
China was uneasy over the Philippines and United States’ use of the Typhon system, and condemned the US for supporting an arms race.
