MANILA – The Government of Japan welcomes the visit of the Philippines’ overall commander and senior admiral of the Philippine Navy, stating the great importance of cooperation between the two nations to “maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law.”

According to the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan KOMURA Masahiro welcomed Philippine Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Toribio Dulinayan Adaci, Jr., who visited Tokyo on February 14, 2024.

Adaci paid a courtesy call to Vice Minister Komura and expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan for its decision to provide coastal radar systems to the Philippine Navy under the “Official Security Assistance (OSA)” program, as its first project after its establishment.

In an earlier statement by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner, Jr., he said that “the coastal radar systems, funded through the OSA program, are a vital addition to the AFP’s maritime defense capabilities and will bolster the ability to monitor and protect the country’s extensive coastline, ensuring the safety and security of our seas.”

The grant, worth 600 million Japanese yen or approximately PHP235.5 million would be spent on coastal radars to enhance the Philippine military’s capabilities in securing the country’s coastline.

During the official visit of Japan Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to the Philippines last November 2023, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. welcomed Japan’s assistance for building the capabilities of the defense forces of the Philippines through its new cooperation framework which is the Official Security Assistance (OSA).
