PH learning crisis getting worse — Philippine Business for Education
by Mary Antalan10 June 2024

The learning crisis in the Philippines is getting worse, the Philippine Business for Education (PBE) said on Saturday, June 8.

In an interview on Special on Saturday, Deputy Executive Director of the Philippine Business for Education Diane Fajardo said international studies show that nine out of 10 10-year-old children in the country do not know how to read.

"Nine out of ten ng ating mga 10 year olds ay hindi marunong magbasa ng simple text o ng simple paragraph," said Fajardo.

Citing the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Fajardo said 15-year-old students are struggling in the subjects of Mathematics, Science, and English.

Fajardo said many laws were passed to address the challenge but lapses have been seen such as the first Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM).

"Ang dami po nating magagandang batas at interventions at with the EDCOM 1 yung mga batas or yung mga sistema na na-put in place maganda po yung intention niya, however, as time goes by, nakita po natin yung mga butas po sa implementation," said Fajardo.

Fajardo noted that although digitalization skills, higher education, culture, and sport have been separated, they are still wide to fill the gap of the learning crisis.

"Ang amin po sanang panawagan na sana po ay gawin nating mas responsive sa local level kasi kumbaga yung magkahati po nakataas pa rin e," she stated.

Despite this, Fajardo hopes that the EDCOM II will be studied further to address the educational crisis that the country is currently facing.

The EDCOM II is a national commission tasked to undertake a comprehensive national assessment and evaluation of the performance of the Philippine education sector.

"Hopefully with EDCOM II ay atleast magpag-aralan talaga or atleast ma-pilot ang decentralization para makita natin kung paano ba mas maka-adopt ang mga localities, schools at division," said Fajardo.
