House Speaker Martin Romualdez affirmed on Sunday that the Philippines is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty against the aggression in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), despite its commitment to peaceful dialogue and resolution.

The speaker’s warning was a direct response to the latest ramming incident in Escoda Shoal on Saturday.

“The Philippines remains committed to dialogue and a peaceful resolution, but we also stand ready to safeguard our sovereignty. We call for respect, and we are determined to meet any challenges that may arise,” Speaker Romualdez said.

The collision between the China Coast Guard ship and the BRP Teresa Magbanua occurred within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Romualdez noted that the attacks from China are part of a broader pattern of aggression, as the incident marks the fifth incident for August.

“With a heavy heart and unwavering resolve, I strongly condemn the recent acts of aggression by the China Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea. The ramming of the BRP Teresa Magbanua, one of our largest and most modern patrol vessels, is a troubling incident that raises serious questions about respect for international law and our nation’s dignity,” Romualdez said.

“To the government of the People’s Republic of China, I wish to convey our deep dismay at these developments. The Filipino people are committed to peace, yet we expect our sovereignty to be respected,” he added.

As a member of the international community, it is part of the country’s obligation to defend its territory, Romualdez said. The government’s hope for constructive dialogue stands. However, Romualdez said that it is evident that their patience is wearing thin.

To protect the country’s maritime claims, Romualdez called for “stronger measures”. This included bolstering the military and coast guard presence in the WPS and strengthening ties with international partners.

The House chief also urged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to escalate the matter to the highest levels of international diplomacy; adding that the United Nationals should be made aware of the the concerning actions.

Romualdez also called on all Filipinos to unite in defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
