Representatives from various groups on Monday filed a petition before the Supreme Court (SC) seeking to declare the law that mandates the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card Registration as unconstitutional.
In the Prohibition and Certiorari petition, the groups are also asking the higher court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) and/or writ of a preliminary injunction against telecommunication companies, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the National Privacy Commission (NPC), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Education (DepEd) in the implementation of the SIM Card Registration.
In addition to this, the petitioners seek the imposition of cease and desist order against telecommunication companies "from using, storing, transferring, and processing all information gathered into the SIM Register and to destroy data already gathered."
The petitioners that signed the motion are the National Union of Journalists (NUJP) of the Philippines Inc., Ronalyn Olea, Eufemia Cullamat, BAYAN Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr., Llore Benidicto Pasco, Dean Matthias Razi Alea, Maded Batara III, Alberto Roldan, Danilo Hernandez Ramos, and Atty. Michael Christopher De Castro.
