The Bicol division of the Department of Education (DepEd) has reported that 408 schools were damaged, with 244 classrooms totally destroyed by Super Typhoon Pepito.
DepEd 5 (Bicol region) Public Affairs Unit (PAU) Chief Mayflor Marie Jumamil said on Wednesday that these numbers were derived from Rapid Assessment of Damages Reports (RADaR) turned over by schools in the region.
“The data has been submitted to the central office as part of our reporting and funding requests. Schools have also been instructed to activate their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and medical teams to assess the safety of classrooms and facilities and to implement necessary interventions for those affected,” she said.
Jumamil reported 108 schools ruined in Catanduanes, with 102 of its classrooms entirely destroyed; 144 schools and 128 classrooms in Camarines Sur; 113 schools and 14 classrooms in Camarines Norte; and 43 schools in Naga City.
Up to 3,848 students were displaced by the super typhoon.
DepEd 5 has tasked its regional DRRM team to make additional assessments of infrastructure damages and to come to students’ and teachers’ aid in Catanduanes.
