The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) will team up with government agencies and social media companies for the Media and Information Literacy campaign as both parties are set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday, August 14, at the Hilton Manila in Pasay City.

This campaign is President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s response to combat the rampant disinformation and misinformation in the country.

Among the measures that the PCO will undertake for its campaign is to include MIL in school subjects and prevent the plaguing in the country’s digital landscape that focuses on entrusting the youth to be more discerning consumers of media, according to PCO Secretary Cheloy Garafil in a statement.

Garafil mentioned that the Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Interior and Local Government, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development will be joining the said media literacy campaign.

She added that the mentioned agencies will cooperate with the PCO on a comprehensive execution plan built to point out the identified root causes of the issue.

Moreover, social media companies, including Google, Meta, TikTok, and X, formerly known as Twitter, are expected to contribute to the collaborative plan by lending their platforms and training to fight against disinformation and misinformation.

Working as a journalist for over a decade, Garafil stated that fake news will never be tolerated, emphasizing that the Office of the President became a victim of both misinformation and disinformation.
